Excerpt from The Views of Judge Woodward and Bishop Hopkins on Negro Slavery at the South: Illustrated From the Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation The Diary from which the following extracts are taken, was kept in the winter and spring of 1838-9, on an estate consisting of rice and cotton plantations, in the islands at the entrance of the Altamaha, on the coast of Georgia. The narrative is in the form of letters written by Frances Anne Kemble (then Mrs. Butler) to a friend in the North. The slaves in whom she then had an unfortunate interest, were sold some years ago. The islands themselves are at present in the power of the Northern troops. The record contained in the pages of her Journal is a picture of conditions of human existence which it is hoped and believed have passed away. If these few pages leave any one in doubt as to the moral, social, and political effects of Southern Slavery, he is referred to the Journal itself, as recently published. No argument will reach the man who is not convinced by this "remarkable revelation of the interior life of Slavery." The following narrative is divided into five chapters, under convenient titles, with head quotations from the extraordinary speech of Judge Woodward, and still more extraordinary letter of Bishop Hopkins, as published and distributed by the Democratic State Central Committee. These startling views of the Judge and the Bishop are best met by the record of Southern Slavery as it is, from the pen of a Christian woman, who had unusual means of observation, and every motive to soften her account of its barbarities.
