Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Forerunners and Competitors of the Pilgrims and Puritans, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Narratives of Voyages Made by Persons Other Than the Pilgrims and Puritans of the Bay Colony to the Shores of New England During the First Quarter of the Seventeenth Century, 1601 1625 With Especial Reference to the Labors of Captain John Smith in Be In a meeting of the directors of the New England Society of Brooklyn in the year 1906, a reference to the coming Jamestown Exposition of 1907 elicited the suggestion that Captain John Smith devoted far more of his time and energy to the development of New England than to that of Virginia. Out of that suggestion and the discussion that followed has grown this work, which is an attempt to show how many adventurers were visiting, exploring, describing, and even trying to occupy the New England coast during the years immediately preceding the successful settlements at Plymouth, Salem, and Boston. As far as possible the story is told in the exact words of one or more of the voyagers. Most of these narratives were included in the "Hakluytus Posthumus, or Purchas His Pilgrimes" of Samuel Purchas, and many of them have more recently reappeared in the Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, in the publications of the Gorges Society and of the Prince Society, in Dr. Jameson´s series of "Original Narratives of Early American History," and in Mr. George Parker Winship´s volume entitled "Sailors´ Narratives of New England Voyages, 1524-1624."
