Excerpt from Alcohol and Life: A Manual of Scientific Temperance Teaching for Schools It is the object of the public elementary school, as set forth by the leading educational authorities, to form and strengthen the character, to develop the intelligence of the children, and to assist boys and girls to fit themselves practically as well as intellectually, for the work of life. In order that these objects may be attained it is necessary that children should be acquainted with the elementary laws of health and should have some knowledge of the action of alcohol and similar drugs. This has been recognized and acted on for several years in different countries. In the United States such teaching, under Government control, has been compulsory for over a quarter of a century. In Canada, Australia, and South Africa it is also embodied in the educational curriculum. A decree by the French Minister of Education in 1902 made instruction regarding the nature and effects of alcohol compulsory in all Government schools. Similar instruction is now given in the schools of nearly all European countries, Sweden and Switzerland being conspicuous for the completeness of their methods.
