Excerpt from State Papers, and Miscellaneous Correspondence of Thomas, Earl of Melros, Vol. 1 It is unnecessary to prefix to this Valuable Collection any account of the very able man, whose Papers are now presented to the Abbotsford Club. Being aware that this Collection of the Papers of our common ancestor would have formed, more appropriately, the contribution of the present Earl of Haddington to the Bannatyne Club, I am desirous to state that the Collection had been designed for publication for the Abbotsford Club by another of its Members, and that it is only through his kindness in ceding the privilege to me, that I am enabled to present, in this form, a Collection which, while it is historically of the greatest value, illustrates, in a conspicuous manner, the great talents, and influence, and authority displayed by the first Earl of Haddington, in the management and direction of the affairs of Scotland. To the principles and political views, which this Collection manifests on so many subjects, his descendants are in no respect committed.
