Shut in by the rocky, pine-clad mountains which tower above them, the thirteen hundred inhabitants of Oberammergau pasture their seven hundred cows on the rich slopes of the Alps, follow their vocations of potter, carver in ivory and wood and agriculturist, and care little for the strife of the outer world: and yet the influence of their lives has touched the remotest bounds of civilization. All this is the result of the single act of one of their number who crept home from a neighboring village, eluding the vigilant guard, on a dark night in 1633.
