Excerpt from Life of Reverend Mother: Mary of St. Euphrasia Pelletier, First Superior General of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd of Angers It will be a hundred years on the 31st of next July since the birth of Rose Pelletier, who became the first Superior General of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd of Angers. It is, therefore, a fitting tribute to her memory that her daughters in England should publish a biography which will make her better known, and -which, by setting forth the history of her inner life, will touch and instruct the hearts of many, who, burn with love for the work of the Good Shepherd. It is not so generally known that the Founder of the Order of Charity, or of the Good Shepherd, -is the Venerable servant of God, John Eudes. who was one of the most distinguished priests among the French clergy during the first and middle parts of the seventeenth century. It was not, however, till within the memory of living people, in 1834, that the Order of Our Lady of Charity was so far developed and consolidated as to require a Superior General. The choice of the Sisters fell upon Mother Mary oft. Euphrasia Pelletier, and she governed the Order with unabated zeal, tact, and prudence till her death, on the 24th of April, 1868, in the seventy-second year of her age.
