Excerpt from Characteristics: From the Writings of Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman; Archbishop of Westminster The published works of Nicholas [Patrick Stephen] Wiseman, Cardinal-Priest of the title of St. Pudentiana, and first Archbishop of Westminster, were both numerous and miscellaneous, and published in many places. No attempt was made to form a complete and uniform edition during his lifetime, nor has any such been as yet undertaken since his death. The following selection from his writings may, it is hoped, promote a more general demand for a reprint of books now not easily procurable, and in danger of being forgotten, to the great loss both of literature and of Catholic interests. Even the library of the British Museum lacks many of his sermons and lectures. The following list has been gathered from many catalogues, yet is probably incomplete, and some few publications may be twice mentioned under different titles. The Editor trusts that the selections he has made will be found varied and characteristic; but they by no means exhaust the beauties of Wiseman.
