Excerpt from Prospects of the Ten Kingdoms of the Roman Empire: Being the Third Series of Aids to Prophetic Enquiry The first edition of this work was published in the year 1849. The present edition has been prepared by me, at intervals, during a protracted and severe illness. Its revision, consequently, has not been so complete as I could have desired. It has, however, been revised, and some additions have been made. The strength of my early convictions as to the truth of the opinions advanced, and as to the infinite importance of that truth, has been, each year, intensified, not enfeebled. Some remarks on the events of the last twenty-five years, and on the present condition of our own once favoured land, will be found in the concluding chapter. (See page 412.) I trust that these remarks may receive from some, candid and prayerful consideration. They may seem severe, perhaps, but there are occasions when severity, and severity only, is kindness.
