The object of these Lenten Addresses is not to lay before you any new views as to those great subjects which at such a time seem appropriate, nor even to attempt to defend and justify the teaching of Christ´s Holy Church about them. I have set before myself a much simpler task, and yet one which, by God´s grace, may be made far from useless even to those of us who have advanced furthest in the spiritual life, or are best able to grapple with the problems which are ever present in it. We who meet in this chapel day after day, to worship the One Lord, differ no doubt socially; and yet there are other differences which mark us off far more sharply from one another. Intellectual differences, in such a society as ours, are easily recognized, and as easily acquiesced in. Differences in spiritual matters must necessarily be a more secret thing known only to Him Who seeth not as man seeth, but seeth the hearts.
