The crown, which had long, and more particularly since the reign of Louis XIV, usurped so many rights of the other orders of the state, found at last to its cost how slender was the foundation whereon the structure of absolute power had been raised; and the various encroachments on the privileges of the clergy, the nobility, and the commons, perpetrated by the ambition, the craftiness, or the misguided levity of some of his predecessors, was expiated on the scaffold by the most virtuous of princes.
