Desiring to signalize this date, members of the department began, in the preceding year, plans for the present volume. In view of war conditions it was thought best to invite contributions only from scholars at some time associated with Professor Gayley in the department, whether as students or as teachers. The editorship of the volume was entrusted to Professors Hart, Kurtz, and Brodeur. The bibliography was prepared by Mr. J. C. Rowell, Librarian Emeritus of the University of California. The volume is now presented to Professor Gayley as an inadequate symbol of the widespread appreciation of his distinguished service as a scholar and trainer of scholars; as a brilliant lecturer, who has taught thousands of men and women to know and to love the best that is in literature; as an eloquent speaker for a true Americanism; and as a wise counselor and constant friend.
