Excerpt from A Day in the Cloister A Few words of explanation are needed to introduce this little work. A literal translation from the original was made by a nun of St Scholastica sPriory, Atherstone, who placed it in the hands of the present writer, with a view to its publication. It was thought, however, to be too long and too didactic in form to suit the taste of English readers, and so, with the kind consent of the author, extensive changes have been made in the text. It is now not a translation but an adaptation; long passages having been omitted, others altered, and a few new paragraphs inserted. But the Editor is only too conscious that he has failed to carry out his task with complete success, and it is with some trepidation that he offers the work to the indulgence of the public. It is, however, hoped that a simple and unvarnished description of life in a modern monastery, may not be without interest, especially as so much curiosity is often evinced as to the details of monastic life.
