Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Bulletin of the Cornell University, Vol. 1: Science My Expedition to the Amazonas, in 1870, was undertaken chiefly for the purpose of studying the geology of the valley, and of examining the table-topped hills, which last had been referred to the Drift. I wished, also, to take into the field a number of scientific students from Cornell University, in the expectation that some of them, at least, might be stimulated to devote themselves to the life study of some branch of Natural History. My funds consisted, in the first place, of the sum of $500, generously placed at my disposal by a friend in New York city, whose modesty, I regret, will not allow me to give his name. This formed a nucleus, to which Col. Edwin B. Morgan, of Aurora, N. Y., one of the trustees of Cornell University, kindly added $1,000, and Professor Goldwin Smith, $500. The Syracuse High School contributed $200, afterwards increased to $500. Messrs. Garrison & Allen, of the Brazilian Mail Steam Ship Company, kindly gave passages, at half fare, for myself and party. I was accompanied by my colleague, Prof. A. N. Prentiss, botanist, together with nine students of the University, and two others. We set sail from New York on the 23d of June, and arrived safely at Para, spending a day at St. Thomas, in the West Indies, in collecting corals and other marine invertebrates. At Pará we established ourselves in private quarters, on the edge of the forest in Nazareth, and spent a month in training, my boys occupying themselves in collecting excursions in the immediate vicinity, though trips were made up the Acará, and to Carapí, Vigia, and Marajo.
