Excerpt from Bulletin of the Ontario Hospitals for the Insane, Vol. 4: A Journal Devoted to the Interests of Psychiatry in Ontario From cases recently present at our tri-weekly Conferences the following have been selected for the present report: - The noteworthy point regarding the first case is that careful observers diagnosed it as one of Chronic Cocainism, and that notwithstanding the entire abstinence since she came under our care four months ago there has been no change in the mental state unless for the worse. Our opinion is that degenerative arterial changes are the cause of the whole condition. In the second case the lengthy period during which the drug, opium, had been taken - 32 years - and the immense doses indulged in, especially during the past three years - 68 grs. of extract of opium daily - with no gastric, intestinal, or mental symptoms evidenced until five months previous to his admission to this Hospital. Also the rapid clearing up and entire absence of mental deterioration at the time of his discharge two months after admission.
