There is abundant material from which to gather this information, but no simple yet detailed account, and it is with the hope of supplying the want that I venture to publish this volume. References throughout the text, and a list of the books consulted, with full titles of the editions used, are given to enable readers to turn for themselves to the acknowledged authorities.
