Excerpt from The Auld Toun O´ Ayr and Its History Since 1800: With Incidents and Anecdotes The annexed Lecture, by Henry C. Gray, Esq., banker, was delivered to a crowded and influential audience in the Ayr Assembly Rooms, on the evening of Thursday the 18th ult., at the request of the Committee of the Ayr Public Library and Reading Room. It appeared at length in the Ayr Advertiser of dates the 25th January and 1st February; and a general desire having been expressed that it should be issued in a separate form, the author has revised it and made a few additions. Mr Gemmell, Frankville, on taking the chair at the meeting when the lecture was delivered, said be begged to congratulate the lecturer on the very crowded attendance. It might seem superfluous to introduce Mr Gray to an audience in Ayr, where he was born and had resided all his life; and not less superfluous to bespeak for him an attentive hearing, as from his known ability, and his powers of research into his subject - "The Auld Town of Ayr since 1800" - he was sure to deliver a lecture instructive to the young as to the place of their nativity, and both interesting and amusing to the oldest among his audience.
