Excerpt from Clifton College Register: A List of Cliftonians From September, 1862, to July 1887, With Alphabetical Index, and Supplement Containing Entries From July, 1887, to December, 1889 In the present year, 1887, on September 30, Clifton College will have completed its twenty-fifth year. It is time, therefore, for its annals to be written. We will not call the pages that shall follow a history, but simply annals. A history should sketch persons and characters, as well as narrate events and include documents; but it is happily too soon to write the biographies of those who have made Clifton College what it is. A history should moralize; it should describe the aims and the methods of the actors in the scenes it relates. Ours is a humbler task - to put before the Clifton boy, when he first enters, some account of the origin and growth of this School, which is to exercise so great an influence on his life; perhaps, here and there, to let him feel the vigour and the generosity of the past; and to inspire him with its high aims and the honourable traditions it has handed down as a sacred deposit. Clifton College was founded in 1860, to meet an obvious need. Previous attempts had been made to establish such a School.
