I doubted how far the life of a Quaker banker in a country town, or the shipment of emigrants from the barren and sad shores of Connaught, afforded much to interest the reading public: and I knew how hard it would be for any one, and how impossible for me, to draw a portrait which should communicate to the beholder any sense of the peculiar charm of the original. But many of Tuke sfriends desired that some memorial should appear of his life; and Mrs. Tuke urged me to undertake the work. Hence my share in this memoir, which has largely been the making of selections from his letters and papers, and from notes made by Mrs. Tuke.
