Excerpt from Gymnastics The following page are devoted to the discussion of gymnastic from the point of view of a learner who desires to become a fine gymnast. No attempt has been made to deal with the medical aspect of the subject, nor has space been given to the description of abnormal feats of strength and dexterity. My main object has been to describe as great a variety of exercises as possible, and to describe them in such a way that the reader, even though he has no previous knowledge of the subject, may be able to set about learning them with a clear idea of what he should try to do. The illustrations, with the exception of a few diagrams, are reproduced from instantaneous photographs taken by Mr. George Mitchell, of Lewisham. In taking these no recourse was had to artificial supports; in every instance the actual exercise illustrated was done and photographed. Thanks are due from me to Mr. J. W.
