There was no waving of handkerchiefs, no outward sign that friends were parting, probably for ever, but we gazed until our forms were no longer distinguishable to each other in the misty distance. Our thoughts then turned from the past to the future. This parting was like a repetition of the time when, full of undefined hopes and expectations, we left our native shores at Trieste. Heifer had then, however, a certain definite aim before him, in his intention of practising as a physician at Smyrna, but among Hindoos and Englishmen in India he had not even this. In the one case it was precluded by the system of caste, in the other, by the scarcely less decided prejudice of the English against any doctors but their own.
