The first was received so cordially, and has obtained such a wide circulation, that he is encouraged to plan for a number of them, believing that they will be specially useful in this particular period, and be a means of perpetuating a grateful remembrance of those who were in the vanguard of the missionary enterprise. Referring to the times and labors of the first missionaries, Rev. J. N. Gushing, D. D., says: "The history of those days, with their lessons of undoubted faith, of firm trust in God for personal protection, and unflinching effort to lay some foundations for Christianity, is an inspiration which the Church cannot afford to lose." The subject of this Memorial has received much less mention than her predecessor, but not for want of excellency of character nor of faithful and sacrificing service. The time of her employment was fully twenty years, and her service was of a very high character, both the intellectual and the spiritual.
