Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Description of the Hundred of Berkeley, Vol. 3: In the County of Gloucester, and of Its Inhabitants It is with much gratification we lay before the Subscribers the Third and last Volume of the first series of Smyth´s Berkeley Manuscripts which the Council of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archæological Society, with the obliging permission of Lord Fitz Harding, has caused to be printed for the members of the Society. We say the first series, for these three volumes form but a small portion of Smyth´s voluminous works, extending to twenty-six volumes, most of them folio, as described by himself in a schedule at the end of this volume. Unfortunately few of these are now extant. At Berkeley Castle is one of them. It would seem to be one of those numbered 7 and 8 in Smyth´s schedule referred to above, probably No. 7. The title-page states it to be "A Register of all such Tenures by Knight´s Service as are belonginge either to the Baronyes of Berkeley and Bruse in the County of Gloucester; or, To the Baronyes of Mowbray and Segrave in the County of Leicester; or, Which are holden of any Manors in the Countyes of Gloucester, Somerset, Leicester, Warwicke, Rutland, Northampton and Suffex, or which lye in any of them; being the inheritance of the right honourable Henry Lord Berkeley, or of Thomas Berkeley knight, sonne and heire apparent of the said Lord Berkeley. Collected by the labours of John Smyth, a professed follower of theire unattaynted family, and finished in Anno tercio Regis Jacobi Primi Anno que Dni 1605." It extends, altogether, to about 440 pages, some few of which are blank. The other volume, No. 8, appears to be lost. In the possession of Reginald Cholmondeley, of Condover Hall, County Salop, Efq., Smyth´s heir-at-law, are two other volumes. One of the set numbered 14, 15 and 16 in Smyth´s schedule.
