Excerpt from Saint Ignatius of Loyola It has been thought desirable that the lives forming this collection should not make any parade of learning. Nevertheless, it is well that the reader should be informed as to the guarantees of accuracy which he has a right to expect in them. This, then, is the manner in which this new life of St Ignatius has been composed. Among the men who heard, questioned, consulted St Ignatius, or held close intercourse with him, there are three who made a careful compilation of their notes and recollections; they are Gonzalez (Acta antiquissima), Ribadeneira (Vita altera), and Polanco (Vita Ignatii - Chronicon Societatis Jesu). The writings of the first two are incorporated in the large volume of the Bollandists, but Polanco´s work was not published till 1894, at Madrid. It is quite equal to the others in precision of detail, in clearness of distinction, in felicity of expression, for Latin had laid bare all its secrets to these men. Therefore, I broke up the life of my Saint into a certain number of fragments, and I compared the testimony of these three contemporaries concerning each of them.
