Nothing can be predicated of China as a whole; it is only possible for me to speak of the small section I know. During the Revolution every province, and indeed every town, was affected differently. But if some statements are not typical, they are all true, and I have had the fullest opportunity of verifying all I have written. I was not in or near Sianfu when the rising there occurred, but I have in my possession long descriptive letters from my colleagues there, and I spent a week in January in constant daily contact with many who were on the actual scene.
