The religions that Christianity superseded were singularly wanting in philanthropy. Neither Greece nor Rome gave encouragement to the spirit that cares for the poor and needy, and seeks to dry up the fountains of human misery. Not that the Greeks and Romans wanted compassion, or were unwilling, on occasion, to make large contributions for the relief of the poor. Roman Emperors, and even rich men in private life, would sometimes make presents of great value to the poorer classes of the citizens.
