Excerpt from Index to the First Twenty Volumes of the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society: 1791 1883, Published at the Charge of the Peabody Fund At a meeting of the Council of the Massachusetts Historical Society, May 10, 1883, "Mr. Deane and Mr. Adams were appointed a Committee to cause to be prepared a Consolidated Index of the twenty volumes of the Proceedings." The Committee accepted the appointment, and placed in the charge of Mr. Charles A. Cutter, the Librarian of the Boston Athenæum, - who is regarded as an expert in cataloguing and indexing, and who had already performed a similar service for the Society, - the making of the new index. His engagements, however, obliged him to intrust the principal part of the work to Mrs. Alice C. Beckwith, of Cambridge, an accomplished laborer in this field, reserving for himself only a general oversight. The intention was to consolidate the indexes of the twenty volumes into one index. But an examination showed - what had been already apparent to many - that the indexes of the earlier volumes were defective; so it was decided to make new indexes to five volumes, beginning with Vol. III. In the progress of the work it was found that some of the later volumes were not wholly free from errors and omissions, and these also required revision; and the additional labor has not been small. The Committee have not been inattentive to the progress of the work, and have rendered what service they could.
