It was first published in London, in 1798; since then, an octavo edition has there appeared, entirely deficient in those points which give to this, its most attractive character; the volume is swelled by dialogues on desultory subjects, generally in a prosing or turgid style, which, however instructive in themselves, seem to us to have no connexion with Keepers adventures, and occasion the touching moral of his story to be completely lost sight of. It was at an early period in excellence of juvenile literature, that this little book, together with Sanford and Merton, and a few others, obtained their celebrity; for it was generally to mediocre talents that children´s books were intrusted, under the impression that any one could write them.
