Professing to give information of practical value to writers, these books have obscured real knowledge by concentrating attention upon details such as pertain to the stationer, the printer, and binder, throwing no light whatever upon the vital subject of obtaining a publisher. In the present work I have aimed at answering the question that is upon the lips of every young author - "How can I find a publisher for what I have written?" A full answer to this question must include a discussion of the principles upon which work is accepted by those to whom literature is a trade, and I have accordingly assumed the responsibility for many statements which represent the views of publishers and their readers, of editors of magazines and newspapers, and of managers of theatres.
