Excerpt from Elements of Geometry This book owes much to criticisms, made by many of my fellow-teacbers, upon my Treatise on Plane and Solid Geometry. To my pupils also I am greatly indebted; their questions and remarks have indicated many difficulties to be smoothed and errors to be avoided in an elementary work. It has been my aim - to state correctly the first principles of the science; upon these premises to demonstrate rigorously and in good English the whole doctrine of Elementary Geometry; and to arrange the matter so as to proceed with easy gradation from the simple to the complex. Some teachers hold that the study of geometry is valuable only as a kind of intellectual gymnastics. Mr. Todhunter says that the admirers of Euclid value it "more for the process of reasoning involved than for the results obtained"; and Mr. De Morgan sums up the educational value of geometry in the habit of "tracing necessary consequences from given premises by elementary logical steps." With such views, much of the best use of the study is neglected. It is as important to begin with truth as to argue logically.
