Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Remarks on the Catholic Layman´s Desultory Examination Sir, The public and yourself will easily imagine how my scribbling vanity must have been wounded, when my eye rented on the following passage in your Desultory Examination: "I may laugh to scorn at the puny efforts of the writer of twenty-six pages in twenty-eight days." Such, no doubt, has been their effect. You have been laughing ever since the appearance of the puny writer´s 26 pages, and the poor mortified author has been constantly annoyed by the report of your more than ordinary good humour. It would have been a valuable addition to our fine gallery in this city, had you permitted some one of our excellent painters to fix that laugh on canvass. But, though laughing is a good thing, there may be too much of it, and the serious mood will have its turn. The public have had full time to read your book of desultory remarks, and to commit to memory the precious extracts, the flowers culled from that odoriferous bouquet so generously distributed gratis by the laughing canonist. May I be permitted to offer for your amusement a few pages more? I could assign fifty good reasons, in addition to that of not interrupting your merriment, for having so long denied myself the pleasure of addressing to you and to the public a few remarks on your last publication.
