Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Babylonian Expedition of the University of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1: Series D: Researches and Treatises About a year ago the undersigned, with the cooperation of four other scholars, published an illustrated work entitled "Explorations in Bible Lands during the Nineteenth Century." This volume was issued with "the hope of both authors and publishers that it might help to fill a serious gap in our modern literature by presenting in a systematic but popular form a fascinating subject, equal in importance to the Bible student, historian, archaeologist and philologist." The fact that the book witnessed seven editions before the close of the first year, was evidence that the hopes cherished had been realized beyond expectation. The cordial reception accorded to the volume, both in the United States and in Europe, was not only most gratifying and encouraging to its authors, but to a certain degree must be regarded as indicative of a sincere sympathy on the part of the public with the exploration of ancient sites in distant Oriental countries. This rapidly growing interest of the educated classes in Oriental research is in no small measure due to the extraordinary importance of recently discovered cuneiform inscriptions, and the fundamental part which Babylonian conceptions and institutions played in the history of civilization and in the shaping of the religious and political life of the Old Testament people. As a result, several new expeditions were organized during the past two years with the purpose of excavating other tablets and monuments in the valleys of the Euphrates and Tigris, and numerous books and treatises were published in order to meet the increased demand for trustworthy information concerning the work of previous explorers. Soon after the appearance of the more comprehensive book referred to above, the writer was requested by representative men of Europe to issue separate German and French editions of his own contribution on "The Resurrection of Assyria and Babylonia," constituting the greater part of that volume.
