Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from A Concise History of Chemistry This book is an attempt to outline as briefly and succinctly as possible the historical development of chemistry, and is designed more especially for those students whose interest in this aspect of the science is stimulated by the inclusion of "Historical Chemistry" in the syllabus of examinations which concern them. It is therefore presumed that the reader is simultaneously acquiring, or already possesses, a fair knowledge of present-day chemical theory and practice, and, accordingly, no space is devoted to the actual explanation of hypotheses or reactions except in so far as the latter are directly bound up with the historical sequence of facts. Whenever practicable, each section is arranged so that it follows approximately those lines upon which a student would learn the simple chemical facts in question; thus, the introductory chapters dealing with the older chemistry (down to Lavoisier) are succeeded by the history of elements and inorganic compounds, treated, as far as possible, according to the Periodic Law, whilst the details of other branches, such as organic and physical chemistry, follow in general the order given in the standard textbooks.
