Excerpt from A Brief Discourse Concerning the Credibility of Miracles and Revelation: To Which Is Added, a Postscript in Answer to the Lord Bishop of Lichfield´s Charge to His Clergy The sincere desire I have always had to serve the cause of Virtue, afrd Religion both natural and revealed, and to place them upon their true Foundations, made me some years agoe publish an Essay on the Truth of the Christian Religion; and not long since, a Treatife wherein I endeavoured to hew, the True Connection between Natural and Repealed Religion. TheSubjedts were of consequence; and as I had had an Opportunity of feeing Some things wrote against Revelation with very great Acuteness, I -found it necessary to treat the Defence of it, in a manner somewhat different from what other Writers had done. What I now lay before you finilhesmy Deign; which was as far as I could, to compleat a Vindication of the Christian Religion in a confluent rational manner; and to Shew that there is nothing absurd, or incredible, in it.
