In the matter of style there is not, possibly, that elaborateness or rigid precision and finish which scholars might desire; but there is clearness and simplicity, I trust, qualities quite as desirable in a book for general readers as any that might be named. In an experience, as a speaker to the young, of twenty years´ standing, I have discovered that they prefer an incident or fact stated in simple, clear words, to one robed in beautiful drapery, or smothered with a profusion of finely chosen or high sounding epithets.
