Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Recollections of Two New England Houses: Built by Rev. Joseph Wheeler, of Worcester, a Paper Read Before the Worcester Society of Antiquity on November 3, 1903 The house which has been selected as the basis for this paper is represented by the photograph before you. That was chosen because of my intimate knowledge of its characteristics. I do not recall another house in the town just like it. There were others and costlier having a resemblance, but differing both in outside appearance and internal arrangement and finish. The Salisbury Mansion is one of them, but the similarity disappears on close inspection. In place of the single central chimney and narrow hall of the former, there are the several chimneys, with the centre and side halls of the latter. There is an old house, formerly a tavern, on the main road to Auburn, situated on a banking several feet above the present traveled way, at one time owned by Eli Thayer, at another by Prentice Brothers, which is of a similar type. In Wilmington in this State, is a house, the resemblance to which is so marked, that, on seeing it for the first time, I said to my wife, who was with me, "There is our old house." It is beautifully situated at the junction of two roads, fronting a broad meadow and shaded by large trees. It was formerly owned and occupied by Wm. F. Harndon, the originator of the express business in this State. It is in an excellent state of preservation and will survive many more generations, if cared for as it now is. There is another similar house on the road from Ayer to Groton; still another between Concord and Bedford; and one in the latter town, the old Parson Stearns Mansion. This is a well preserved and good specimen of old Colonial architecture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
