Excerpt from The World as Intention: A Contribution to Teleology It has been remarked by Hume "that all popular theology, especially the scholastic, has a kind of appetite for absurdity and contradiction. If that theology went not beyond reason and common sense, her doctrines would appear too easy and familiar. Amazement must of necessity be raised, mystery affected, darkness and obscurity sought after, and a foundation of merit afforded to the devout votaries, who desire an opportunity of subduing their rebellious reason by the belief of the most unintelligible sophisms." This language alludes in derision to the essential property of religious belief and worship, the transcendental aspects it gives to living, and the implication in its formularies of ideas transcending sense and experience. But at the same time it is not without sting, and, though it may have been dictated in choler or in irritation, it reminds us with a heartless taunt, perhaps salutary and not undeserved, that we burden our faith with unnecessary accessories, and, like an overdressed woman, are more anxious about the variety of our theological outfit than the quality of our actions.
