Excerpt from Tables of Biblical Chronology: Exhibiting Every Date Definitely Given in the Holy Scriptures, With the Passage or Authority on Which It Rests; Constructed in Such a Manner as to Verify Themeselves The following Tables have been prepared in the belief that the numerical statements of the Bible were deliberately and systematically made, and may therefore be relied upon for purposes of exact and definite chronology, when interpreted according to the usus loquendi of the writers and their conventional methods of computation. The apparent difficulties and discrepancies among them are to be explained on the same common-sense principles that would be applied to any other truthful historians. The intricacy of the subject requires much care and some ingenuity, and the brevity, antiquity, and isolation of the record justify an occasional resort to hypothesis, in order to fill the gaps or trace the links. A patient and candid examination of the details of the adjustments proposed, is the only legitimate test of the correctness of these convictions and theories. Nothing has been assumed that does not necessarily - or at least naturally - grow out of the data in the sacred text itself, or is not found in clear contemporary annals. N. B. - The larger figures, set transversely to the others in the columns, represent the number of years silently omitted as containing no date. The double points set in the columns designate the second, third and fourth quarters of the years respectively.
