Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The History of the Great Northern Railway: 1845-1895 In writing this book my prime object has been to give a complete account of the origin and development of the year 1895, a period, roughly speaking, of fifty years. In so doing, however, I have necessarily had to give much information with regard to other railways of Northern England and Scotland, and so I am not afraid to claim that the book forms a fifty years record of the fortunes of all the great trunk systems connecting London and the North - a record hardly any part of which has previously been presented to the public. The style of presentation I have adopted will. I hope, at once satisfy by its accuracy and thoroughness readers already acquainted with the subject-matter, and attract "the general reader" by its continuous thread of narrative and strong dramatic interest. As regards the facts given, I have spared no pains to insure correctness and comprehensiveness. Without seeking access to the private archives of the Great Northern Company, and so placing myself under obligations which could have been met only by a sacrifice of my impartiality, I have, nevertheless, been able to obtain information of the most intimate and authentic character with respect to all the chief events with which my History deals. Moreover, I have had most valuable assistance, which I acknowledge with great gratitude, from a number of the men mentioned most prominently in my narrative.
