This is the attitude which is voiced in most of the poems here collected. In the pages of many of the great poets of bygone days we may search in vain for any mention of the child: we shall find sonnets "To the Rosette on my Mistress´Slipper," passionate prayers "To the Comb in my Mistress´ Hair," odes to Depression, Despondency, Jocosity, and a thousand abstract frames of mind. But to our forefathers the child was no fit subject for poetry, unless death had stilled the restless little hands, or a fathers falseness and a mother´s grief made it the centre of a woman´s tragedy.
