Excerpt from The History of Standon: Parish, Manour and Church, With Two Hundred Years of Registers In writing a short account of the Parish of Standon, I had intended at first merely giving the Registers for a certain number of years, and the names mentioned in the Court Rolls; but the work itself opened out other subjects, and thus I have taken up a short history of the early customs and ancient nomenclature from those days, when, in all probability, the parish and manour began to be defined. I have thus tried to connect, from such an early date, a kind of succinct narrative down to later times. Imperfect as my work must be, I have little doubt that, in the hands of an abler writer, such a parish and manour as Standon would offer great advantages; not because it is historically famous, nor because it is grown into importance on account of commerce and increase of population, but because it is one of those parishes which has had a kind of simple history from the early time of Domesday: a history which shows up the gradual changes from primitive times down to more recent dates, and which have not affected considerably the boundaries of the manour nor caused any diminution of interest which such an ancient manour as Standon must arouse. And though it cannot claim, as some manours do, the same possessing family, or direct descendants of a family, commencing from Domesday, it can claim the site of the original manour house; the same church, altered though it may be; and the present existing mill on a near site to the more ancient one; all of which are mentioned in the Domesday account.
