Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Collectanea Anglo-Minoritica, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, a Collection of the Antiquities of the English Franciscans, or Friers Minors, Commonly Call´d Gray Friers; In Two Parts; With an Appendix Concerning the English Nuns of the Order of Saint Clare Courteous Reader, If the Writer of these following Sheets had presented the World with an Account of the ancient Heathens, and their Manners, Rites, and Customs, studious Men wou´d have been ready enough to turn over the Work, and the Subject wou´d not have been Scrupled at, if the Performance had proved to be Ingenious. Shou´d he have Writ of the Flamins, or the Druids, from whom sprang the superstitious Worship of the Britans, he wou´d not have wanted Subscribers to the Tract: Nay, the old Rhyming Bards (Pagans as they were) wou´d have found a kind Reception. This gives we Hopes, that he may be permitted to pick up a few Gleanings of Christian History, and may not be blamed for rescuing the Characters of many renowned English Franciscans from Moths and Worms. They were a Society of wel-meaning Christians, and our Country-Men; and on these Considerations, I presume, they cannot be disagreeable to all. If we are better Men than they were, we have great Reason to congratulate with ourselves, and to return Thanks to God; and if we are not so good, we may here find ourselves animated to a due Contempt of this perishing World, and to the Study of Vertue and Learning, by the Example of those that have gone before us: And if nothing of all this will go down with us, it cannot, however, be denied. but that a true (though imperfect) Account of them and their Acts will be an amusing Addition to our Knowledge, by informing us what Sort of Men have, in Times past, dwell´d on English Ground. It´s true they were Friers; but they are dead And gone many a fair Tear ago, and it is Pity, methinks, that all the Memory of their Merits shou´d die too.
