Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Legion of Marching Madmen "November, 1914. - We land! God knows how! Appalling muddle. Scores of men drowned before my eyes as we scramble from boats to shore. No sooner on dry land than we meet terrific enfilade of fire. Men drop all around me, mown down like rotten sheep by fire of jeering Turks. Ghastly. We had not covered five hundred yards of this strange land when two companies in front line wiped out. Indians running with us and yelling excitedly. See some drop with hands clasped around bellies. Queer expressions in their dark faces. Awful slaughter. Running blindly, crouching low, tummy in sand, firing from snap. It seemed an age - running head down towards that hail of lead. Could not see. Maybe I closed my eyes. It was horrible - that yelling, screams of pain, rattle of fire. Chattering machine guns raked us with hot lead. I was sick. Hundreds dropping in those terrible minutes. Dead lying around in heaps. Stumbling over them. Felt a coward. Wanted to stop one so I could get it over. I knew we could not survive that shower of bullets. It had to come. Mine came. A hot, stinging jab in the shoulder. Strange giddiness. Blindness. Falling..." Such was my impression of the actual landing in Mesopotamia in that never-to-be-forgotten November of 1914, less than four months after the commencement of the Great War of 1914-1918. Such was my baptism of fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
