In the memorable Protest read and laid on the table in presence of the Royal Commissioner on the 18th of May, 1843, those who signed it protested that the Claim agreed to in the previous year, and since brought under consideration of Parliament, must be considered as setting forth the true constitution of the Church of Scotland, and that no Assembly must be regarded as a true Assembly of that Church which is not held on the footing of it.
