Excerpt from Lectures for Boys Sundays, Vol. 1: The Sundays of the Year; Our Lady´s Festivals; The Passion of Our Lord; The Sacred Heart Any one who has had to deal with boys, will know how little hold om their attention the spiritual works seem to have which either are put into their hands, or are read to them for their instruction. It is not that such works are in nowise applicable to their age; nor is it because the matter of them is not in itself excellent, and better perhaps than anything that we can pretend to offer. Why then does it fail to catch their attention? If we might venture to assign a reason, we should be inclined to say, that it is because the matter treated of, though in a certain sense applicable to them, is nevertheless seldom or never actually applied. It is above their heads, for it is oftentimes abstract and theoretical. Now anything of this nature, especially if it is introduced into religious teaching or exhortation, does not catch their attention. It puzzles and it wearies them. This fact, though already well known to the present writer, obtruded itself in a special manner upon his notice some years ago, when his Superiors intrusted him with the care of the boys at the venerable College of St. Edmunds, Douai. In his capacity as Prefect, a large share in the work of their moral training fell to his lot, and a very little observation served to convince him that his labour would be thrown away, unless the grand principles of the Moral Law were brought straight home to their hearts.
