Excerpt from A Dissertation on Native Depravity Within a few years past, the attention of the churches has been drawn to some novel speculations in theology, the nature and tendency of which have excited not a little alarm. With what ingenuousness and frankness of mind, they have been introduced to the consideration of the public, different men will probably form a different judgment, as they have been more or less acquainted with the history of these discussions. The error to which I am about to refer in these pages, was, I distinctly remember, a few years ago, but delicately hinted at, and very modestly, though assiduously suggested in private conversation. The first assault upon the Doctrine of Native Depravity was from the New-Haven School, and in their own covered way to the field. Some few ministers of the gospel, in high standing, and hitherto supposed to be attached to the doctrines of the Reformation, began to speak with an indefiniteness and looseness on this subject, to which they had not been accustomed.
