Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Is a Ship Canal Practicable?: Notes, Historical and Statistical, Upon the Projected Routes Fro an Interoceanic Ship Canal Between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans The following notes upon the routes proposed for an interoceanic ship canal across the American Isthmus, collated and arranged during intervals of professional occupation, were laid by friends before the Hon. W. H Seward, during the closing year of his administration of the State Department, and were, about the same period, submitted to perusal of the late R. J. Walker, ex-Secretary of the Treasury. Receiving the commendations of their enlightened judgments, the writer has thought that the publication might not be without interest to those who, like himself, are seeking information out of which to form an intelligent opinion of the feasibility of a ship canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In attempting condensation of the original notes, passages have been omitted, which has had the effect of breaking the continuity of paragraphs, without, however, omitting any facts having an important bearing upon the subject-matter. A large space has been given to the subject of tunneling, because the cost of such works was believed to be closely related to the question of practicability. Prepared before the completion of the Suez Canal, and before the sailing of the last isthmean expedition, some additions have been made in order to bring the history of these operations down to the present date.
