Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Stage Favourites of the Eighteenth Century Anne (invariably called "Nance") was thought by Joseph Knight to have been the granddaughter of a vintner, and daughter of a soldier in the Guards. He thought that the father was, perhaps, the James Oldfield of St. Martin´s -in -the -Fields, who married Elizabeth Blanchard, of the same parish, on December 4, 1782. According to Edmund Bellchambers, Nance "would have possessed a tolerable fortune, had not her father, a captain in the army, expended it at a very early period." Anyhow, mother and daughter were evidently in very poor circumstances, for as a mere child Nance worked as a seamstress at Westminster, and "lived in." Presently she went to reside with the mother at the Mitre Tavern, St. James´s Market. This was kept by a Mrs. Foss, who, one authority says, was Nance´s aunt, and another, Dr. Doran, believes to have been Nance´s elder sister - in which latter case, unless Elizabeth Blanchard was a widow when she married Oldfield, since Nance was born within a year of that marriage, then Mrs. Foss was illegitimate. Really it seems a shame to take away her good name unnecessarily. It is said that Nance was from her youth stagestruck, and spent all her spare time reading the plays of Beaumont and Fletcher and others.
