Excerpt from On the Beatitudes: With Others Mostly Preached Before the University of Oxford; To Which Is Added a Preface Relating to the Recent Volume of Essays and Reviews Since the first Edition of these Sermons was put to press, the volume of Essays and Reviews, which I had taken occasion to notice in the preface, has reached its eighth edition, and the strong and general disapprobation with which it has been received among Church-people of all shades of opinion, and the weighty expressions of condemnation on the part of all the bishops, and both Houses of the Convocation of the clergy of the province of Canterbury, - not to speak of various Reviews of greater and less importance, - might seem to make it less necessary, perhaps hardly seemly, for a private clergyman to offer observations of his own, as if he had any right by position, or claim from learning or ability, to be heard separately among so many voices. But I shall venture, not indeed to reprint exactly my former preface, but to recast it in some degree, with reference to the more advanced state in which the controversy, so to call it, now stands. I also wish to explain myself more fully on some points on which my meaning seems to have been somewhat misunderstood.
