Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The White Cat Dear Children: Marie Catherine Le Jumelle De Berneville, afterwards Mme. La Comptesse D´Aulnoy who wrote these tales, was I fear something of an adventures. So are we all of us, every man, woman and child on this globe, adventures. What I mean is that not all of her adventures were admirable. It was in the time of Louis XIV, and, like full bottom wigs, Romance was the fashion. Little Marie Catherine was born in 1655, and her mother, she hints, was too young and too pretty a woman of fashion to enjoy a growing, let alone a grown up daughter. Marie Catherine was sent to a convent school and at the ages of twelve to fifteen began her career of letters. Very literally so, for she copied out long-winded love letters from Romances and Novels of the period and sent them to one of her professors, M. de Blossac. The good man enjoyed them hugely until the nuns got wind of it, and then there was outcry and scandal. The small penitent, with mamma behind her, was all for becoming a nun, but M. le Jumelle de Berneville, who seems to have been a man of humor and sense, eloped with his own daughter in a coach and four. And in this coach was waiting, just like a Fairy Tale, a charming young husband, Francois de la Mothe, Sieur d´Aulnoy. Later the mother and daughter seem to have combined together against the Compte d´Aulnoy, and there is a hint of his having been charged with lèse-majestè (or treason against the king), but escaping it triumphantly. And there is another rumor of Mme. d´Aulnoy having known for too intimately a certain notorious Madame Tiquet, beheaded for the murder of her husband. Later still Marie Catherine and her mother turned up at the court of Charles the Second, plunged into its intrigue and tittle tattle, and she wrote a Memoir of the Court of England, full of assumed names and dubious episodes, rather like a poor play.
