Excerpt from Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 6 It will be remembered that volume v of the Collections was published in three parts, representing the years 1867, 1868, and 1869. This form of publication led to difficulties, owing to the fact that the parts appear to have been distributed on different mailing lists; and being bound in paper, they were not properly cared for by many of the recipients. Thus was the edition in large measure wasted, only those accustomed to book collection keeping their parts together, and soon the volume became a rarity. Chapter 105, Laws of 1872, provided that "a volume of not exceeding 500 pages be printed, not oftener than every two years, commencing in the year 1872," the edition to be 2,000 copies, bound in cloth. Volume vi was the first to be issued under the new law. Sixty pages are filled with the annual reports of the Executive Committee for the four years (1869-72) intervening since the appearance of volume v; and eighty-three more with memorial addresses on several distinguished citizens of the Commonwealth who had died in the interim. Under the present publishing arrangements, this class of material is contained in the annual volume of Proceedings; but previous to 1887, the Collections furnished the only medium for its presentation. Samuel A. Storrow´s interesting contemporary account of "The North-West in 1817" is material of much importance to the general history of this region.
